Start Young UK Joins Maryland Primary School for a Special Windrush Celebration

Start Young UK (SYUK) was proud to attend Maryland Primary School's Windrush Celebration, witnessing first-hand the transformative impact of its Thrive programme on young people within the school community.

The event brought together pupils, families, community leaders and distinguished guests, including representatives from the Government Cabinet Office and Baroness Doreen Lawrence, to honour the legacy, resilience and contributions of the Windrush Generation. Through music, storytelling, art and performance, pupils explored themes of courage, perseverance and belonging while celebrating the rich cultural heritage that continues to shape modern Britain.

Among the performers were several pupils who have participated in Start Young UK's Thrive programme over the past five years. Their confidence, engagement and stage presence reflected the long-term impact of the programme, which supports children to develop self-belief, resilience and a stronger sense of belonging both in school and within their communities.

The event highlighted the value of Thrive's holistic approach, which provides children with the mentorship, support, resources and opportunities they need to flourish both personally and academically.

Reflecting on the programme's impact, Headteacher Lorna Jackson, MBE said: "Children have become much more confident in school, both socially and academically." She added that their progress was clearly reflected in the way they performed and engaged throughout the event.

The celebration served as a powerful reminder of the importance of sustained investment in programmes that help young people thrive. For Start Young UK, it reinforced how confidence-building opportunities can unlock potential, strengthen communities and empower the next generation to succeed.
