Opening Doors to Opportunity: Elevate Students Visit New Scotland Yard.
On the 25th September, as part of the Elevate 2026/27 London cohort in partnership with Barclays had the opportunity to visit New Scotland Yard, gaining an insight into the people, careers and specialist roles that make up the Metropolitan Police.
For young people, sometimes the most valuable opportunities begin simply by being given the chance to step into a new environment, meet people with different experiences and see what is possible. The visit provided students with far more than an opportunity to see behind the scenes. It gave them the chance to engage directly with professionals, ask questions and experience a working environment that many may not otherwise have had access to.
Learning from professionals
The day began with a warm welcome from Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, followed by inspiring talks from Commander Charmaine Brenyah and other speakers from the Metropolitan Police. Hearing directly from professionals about leadership, policing and public service gave students an opportunity to understand the different experiences, responsibilities and career pathways within a major public organisation.
For young people developing their confidence and considering their futures, these interactions can be incredibly valuable. Meeting professionals and hearing about their experiences helps make career possibilities feel more tangible — while encouraging students to ask questions, engage with new ideas and consider pathways they may not previously have explored.
Seeing careers beyond the classroom
Students were also introduced to a range of specialist disciplines across the Metropolitan Police, including firearms, traffic policing and forensics. They even had the opportunity to meet mounted officers and their horses. Experiences like this sit at the heart of what Elevate is designed to achieve.
Career Preparation is about helping young people understand the world of work and the different pathways available to them.
Personal Growth is about developing the confidence, communication and resilience to engage with unfamiliar environments and new people.
And Workplace Integration is about creating meaningful connections between young people and professionals, giving them opportunities to experience workplaces and learn directly from those working within them.
The power of partnership
Visits such as this also demonstrate what can happen when organisations open their doors and invest their time, knowledge and expertise in the next generation. We would like to extend a special thank you to PC Stacia Traille and PC Malu Nkonko for arranging the visit and helping create such a valuable experience for our students.
These experiences are made possible through collaboration. Schools, employers, professionals, community organisations, sponsors and funders all have an important role to play in helping young people access opportunities that can broaden their horizons. For SYUK, building these relationships is about more than a single event. It is about creating a network of opportunity around young people — one that gives them greater access to knowledge, professional networks, experiences and the confidence to take their next steps.
Part of a bigger journey
The visit to New Scotland Yard is one moment within a much wider six-month Elevate journey. Across the programme, students are continuing to develop their skills, confidence and understanding of the world of work through experiences that challenge them to step outside their comfort zones and see new possibilities for their futures. Because confidence doesn't develop in a single session. It grows through experience — meeting new people, entering unfamiliar environments, asking questions, discovering new interests and beginning to believe that opportunities are within reach.
That is the purpose of Elevate: to help young people turn access into opportunity, and opportunity into confidence for the journey ahead.
