Over the past few months, the Elevate Manchester cohort in partnership with Barclays has continued to grow in confidence, self-awareness, and ambition as they progress towards the final stages of the programme.

Delivered in partnership with industry professionals and volunteers, the sessions have provided students with meaningful opportunities to explore career pathways, develop employability skills, and better understand the future of work.

Building Confidence, Mindset and Future Values

A key focus of recent sessions has been helping students develop a growth mindset and understand how personal values influence future career decisions. Led by Sean Leaf, students explored self-awareness, resilience, and how mindset can shape long-term success.

Connor S., a Proposition Manager at Barclays, shared his personal career journey, offering honest insights and practical advice that resonated strongly with students. Rebecca Davies also introduced Barclays apprenticeship opportunities, helping young people understand alternative routes into employment.

Through discussions, debates, and collaborative activities, students demonstrated impressive confidence, creativity, and communication skills.

Exploring AI, Technology and the Future of Work

Technology and digital awareness formed another important part of the programme. Sessions led by Karla Murphy, alongside Samia Durrani and Kevin Tian from Accenture, introduced students to artificial intelligence, digital ethics, and online safety.

Students explored both the opportunities and challenges of an AI-driven world, sparking thoughtful conversations about responsibility, innovation, and the evolving workplace.

Planning for the Future

As the cohort progressed, attention turned towards goal setting and future planning. Students reflected on their strengths, transferable skills, and aspirations while learning how to apply SMART goals to everyday life and career planning.

Rachel Wood led a session focused on personal development and career journeys within banking, while Matthew Anderson shared his experience transitioning from the military into cyber security, demonstrating how mindset and adaptability can open new opportunities.

Students also gained insight from Kathryn Grimwade of Siemens PLC and Callum Taylor from Greater Manchester Police, who highlighted diverse career pathways and the many routes available after education.

Creative vision board activities encouraged participants to map out their ambitions and identify the support needed to achieve their goals.

Developing Personal Brand and Professional Identity

Recent workshops have also focused on helping students understand their personal brand — recognising strengths, interests, and values while maintaining authenticity.

Led by Hannah Allen, the session encouraged confidence-building through interactive activities and reflection. Apprentices Wiktoria Maga and Mohammed Ally from Amazon shared relatable experiences, offering students real insight into apprenticeship pathways and early careers.

The day was filled with learning, creativity, and collaboration, providing a supportive environment where every student felt heard and encouraged.

A Collective Effort

The success of Elevate Manchester has been made possible through the dedication of mentors, speakers, and partner organisations who have generously shared their time and expertise. Their support continues to help young people broaden their horizons and see new possibilities for their futures.

As the cohort approaches graduation, it has been inspiring to witness students grow in confidence, develop new skills, and begin to shape clearer visions for their next steps.

At Start Young UK, creating opportunities that empower young people to elevate remains at the heart of everything we do - and we look forward to celebrating the cohort’s achievements very soon.
